Aye, it doesn't happen for everyone. Mine was actually pretty much identical to yours, until I decided to just drop the whole "pretend you're a guy" façade and fully embrace my femininity.
For some people, there's a conflict of who to be. For people like you and me, it was pretty much always our mindset. We only conformed to meet social norms until we built up the confidence to drop it.
