On that, it seems to me that thanks to gravity (and possibly the male rib cage), the number doesn't change anywhere near as quickly as the shape does. I've changed by only about half an inch over the last 3 months, but compared to how they've changed in depth and roundness this is hard to believe.

I agree. I also think it's easy to make measuring errors when trying to hold the tape measure at the exact same spot as the previous time. Even if no errors are made, there's no subjectivity with numbers like there is with pictures. For example, when you say you've gained half an inch, how can we possibly know otherwise?

It's not like we can go over to your house and measure you ourselves.
