Can this be something one can do at home, or must one seek professionals?

It's called laser hair removal. If you have dark hair and lighter skin it works the best. As far as pain yes it can hurt and feels like a rubber band smacking hard against your skin. However it's much faster than electrolysis as far as pain his concerned. However where laser did not work, electrolysis is necessary such as white or blonde or red hair. Both can be very expensive but you can find package deals much cheaper.

it is way more expensive for me to do my whole face. I instead opted to get a single treatment every six weeks at $100 USD they pop om my upper lip since it's my worst spot. After each treatment my upper lip is very red and swollen and puffy, however that subsides within a couple hours. It takes about a week and a half for it to completely get un swollen. Then as the hair follicle start dying off the hairs start pushing out and eventually fall out. You are not generally advised to pull these hairs out yourself because the process of hair dying has not completed and if you pull them out prematurely this may not be effective and you will have to retreat that same follicle again later. Supposedly this method is somewhat permanent however most places will charge you half price to do follow-up procedures if the hairs grow back. I've been told that the procedure last about four years on the average but your mileage may vary based on individual results. Once once all the hairs fall out, and you do all the treatments which typically is about six to seven treatments, your face will be smooth and without Shadow. It has felt nice not to have to shave everyday or tweeze my hair out every day.

I would say yes, I would consult with both because of the blonde hair. But electrolysis unfortunately may be your path. The prices can vary according to the individual business. You'll just have to google your local laser/electro places and get quotes and go for a consultation. I would also pay attention tohonest reviews because I've heard of dishonest technicians milking trans folks to keep us coming back knowing how we have lots of facial hair.

I agree with what Silly Girl has said.

I've pursued the laser hair removal option as my facial hair is mostly dark and my skin tone color is light.

The pain level varies. The upper lip area was the absolute worst for me. Second place was my jawline. Over time other places like my cheeks and neck weren't painful for me as my facial hair isn't that dense there.

Each treatment was about every six weeks, so at least I didn't have to spend a lot of money all at once. I think I got a total of seven or so treatments. You can't get all of your facial hair in one sitting as your hair grows in cycles and the laser can only treat the hair when it's in a particular cycle of growth. If you feel pain during the session and you can smell burnt hair afterwards, you'll know the session was a success.

I still shave on a daily basis, but fortunately shaving is a much faster and less painful experience than prior to the laser treatments. Razor cuts and razor burns are practically a thing of the past of me.

Well i can tell you that electrolosys really works, but as pointed out above, hair grows in cycles so some follicles will be resting at any point in time and those will get missed until they start growing again. So it's somwhat of an iterative process. Also, the follicles don't necessarily die the first time, although many do.

I am talking about real electrolosys (with electricity), not the radio stuff they call "electrolosys".

My experience was that it took maybe 6 months of going for treatment every few weeks. It takes quite a while even for a good practitioner, so you may it may take 3 or 4 sessions just to do your face - plus some repetition later to catch the previously dormant follicles.

I did not find it overly expensive and did it while i was not working.

You definitely need to plan on your skin being all red and swollen for a few hours afterwards. Don't plan on being in public right affer treatment.

In my experience it's not overly painful, but certain parts like upper lip are very sensitive. I found that i could only take so much in a session.

Being born blonde (though brunette at the time of electrolosys), i found that it was not necessary to be meticulous about geting every last hair completely killed. I still have a few very blond, short, light hairs that keep growing and i simply making plucking them part of my routine every few days.

Never worked for me. I ended up being brave, and just epelating my face and neck. Now, I just use it like an electric shaver every morning. My facial hair is now very fine and soft, just like when when we first started growing. Above my lip seems to be the only place that's showing the occasional dark thick hair.
