Using oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) and HRT (hormone replacement therapy) can and does produce hoarseness/dryness plus laryngeal mucosa… Thus changes to the voice. @ Oleysia or (aka) BOTURNEDMEINTOAWOMAN, that statement about Licorice changes the voice didn't say using LR will make you a soprano lol. I take to mean that it helps one's voice from the side effects of using OCP/HRT.
Introduction
Previous studies have documented significant changes in phonatory (means to produce speech sounds or vocalize) function resulting from fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone levels during the menstrual cycle. These phonatory alterations may differ according to menstrual cycle phase. For example, premenstruation is associated with vocal fatigue, decreased intensity range, loss of harmonics, and reduced frequency perturbation (Abitbol et al., 1999, Chae et al., 2001). Concomitant premenstrual laryngeal tissue alterations include vocal fold edema, erythema, and laryngeal joint stiffness, as well as increased drying and thickening of the laryngeal mucosa (Abitbol et al., 1999, Davis and Davis, 1993, Greenspan and Strewler, 1997, Higgins and Saxman, 1989). These changes have been linked with increases in estrogen and progesterone levels during this time frame.
Similarly, increased vocal noise, or hoarseness, has been reported during menstruation as evidenced by higher harmonics-to-noise ratios (Brown and Rothman, 1985, Higgins and Saxman, 1989). The time frame of ovulation, which often corresponds to the midpoint of the menstrual cycle, has been associated with increased frequency perturbation, suggesting greater instability of the voice (Higgins & Saxman, 1989). Higgins and Saxman suggested that this finding implicated possible alterations in neurotransmitter levels which ultimately affected laryngeal motor control.

A study by Meurer et al. using connected speech did show increased frequency variation and intensity in OCP users. The evidence prior to this study had shown the changes in the vocal folds induced by OCPs not to be sufficient to affect connected speech. However, this new evidence suggests that there might be hormone mediated changes in connected speech. The evidence more strongly supports that the sustained vowels in singing are affected by hormonal contraceptives.

Certain herbal remedies, such as licorice root and slippery elm, are believed to have soothing properties for the throat and may be used as complementary treatments for vocal nodules.
--For licorice with glycyrrhizin, look for products standardized to contain 22% glycyrrhizinic acid or glycyrrhizin.
--For licorice without glycyrrhizin, look for medications labeled DGL or "deglycyrrhizinated."
For most disorders: Take 200 mg standardized extract in pill form three times a day, or 20 to 45 drops, three times a day, of a 1:5 tincture. (The 1:5 tincture represents one herb soaked in five parts liquid).
For cough and congestion: Drink one cup of licorice tea three times a day. To make the tea, pour 8 ounces of very hot (but not boiling) water over 2 teaspoons of the herb, steep for 10 minutes, and then strain. To make a blended herbal tea for coughs, steep 1 teaspoon each of dried licorice and slippery elm in very hot (but not boiling) water along with 2 teaspoons of the herb marshmallow for 5 minutes. Drink one cup three times a day. Use no longer than three weeks.
