This sounds like outward branching (conective tissue) while the empty feeling in the center is the ductal system not yet filling in. In other words, an imbalance of progesterone to estrogen, prolactin could be low seeing the under development of the branching, aka milk ducts (lol, not duds) that's my guess FWIW.
