The 'tapping' is a 'self stimulatory' gesture, similar to those engaged in by autistics, but more socially acceptable.
The left side of the body being connected to the right side of the brain.
It seems to drive the pump that keeps it up and running in the day time. You'll probably find that a lot of the more able of your colleagues do something similar, or maybe they just need to drink a lot of coffee.
Do you sometimes find it easier to achieve really big things on your own if you work at night?
