My Gender Doctor

#1

Well, I went.......  Not really sure what I expected, maybe a Voodoo Priestess, human skulls saying "Davy Jones was Here".   Rolleyes

The appointment was slated for about an hour.  Once I got in to see him, till the time I walked out of the clinic was about 1hr 20mins.  I would say, other than the normal B/P, weighing in by the nurse...  The doctor asked me TONS of questions.  Ranging from who all have I "outed" myself to, did I have at least their support or understanding? To, what my ultimate goal was as far as feminization and what was my core belief in how I truly felt?

Wow, didn't know I had another therapist.  LOL....  But I think I understand the grilling I got from him..

Iowa is an "Informed Consent" state, but this doctor conforms to the care and guidelines set up for the LGBT Community.  He is himself, gay, and does an awful lot of outreach for the community...  So, he puts his money and time where his mouth is....

He wants to chat with my Therapist and my regular M.D..  He says so he feels comfortable with the fact that there is a window of safety for hormones to be used, and that I am truly o.k. in making this commitment.  I totally get that, and feel more comfortable that he may just have my best interest at heart.  That he is just NOT filling a much needed niche to make money.  I of course sign the necessary docs for him to consult with the therapist and my doctor.

I told him that I was diagnosed with Gynecomastia about 6 - 7 yrs ago, and I decided that I was going to help Mother Nature out the best I could and have been doing herbs from SP to PM and even for a short time have used Bi-Estro Cream.  I also told him that I know that using a lot of "Over the Counter" drugs and such was a crap shoot health wise and money wise.  And that was the primary reason for me seeking professional help.  Not only for the feminization, but mentally to make sure that I was just not board or doing something cause it was Taboo.  But I also explained I have been cross dressing for 1/2 of my life.  And that if he felt he couldn't help, I would understand but I would still pursue and stay the course on DIY Feminization.

He says he will get in touch with me as soon as he confer's with my therapist and doctor.  I told him that I hoped it is sooner than later.

Overall.....  It was a decent experience...  My thoughts are I think I have a 50- 50 chance of getting HRT, but who knows, right.   Well the Gender Doctor will know.  LOL

It must be something in the water they drink, my GD is a transgender female. So just trying to bullshit her does not work ..lol

I agree, it's best for the Dr to ask all those questions, and for you to answer as honestly as you can.

I am happy it ended up being a pleasant experiance for you.

Small steps at a time, it will all work out in the end.

That is amazing how a Psychiatrist can specialize in this field, what is his background?

Well BB, the appointment today was with a Gender Doctor.  I would guess he's in his early 50's and gay.  He is not an endo, but that was his secondary rotation before becoming a full fledge M.D.

He does  Tons, and tons of outreach work with the LGBT community here in Iowa.  He goes to support groups to let people know that there is a very friendly Trans-Gender doctor in the area.  He also goes around to local hospitals and checks on any trans gendered patience strictly as a social call type thing.

I am hoping he will call me back and ask me to come in to start my HRT this next week.  But that depends on his conversation with my regular M.D. and my Therapist.

BTW, a lot of people don't know that doctors in the U.S. have to have background in psychology and do at least one rotation at a mental institution or Outpatient Clinic that helps with Mental Health issues.  Even my daughter, who is an LPN had to do that as well before she could graduate.  I would assume it's that way in most Western Style countries too....  I just don't have the personal knowledge of that.

Well, like I said in my original post in not knowing what to expect.  He is not a stereotypical gay as in being a militant, in your face.  Just a very pleasant and seems very easy to chat with.  Up to this point, I have been a very lucky person.  Just  think, it's only been 3 months since coming out to my doctor or less even.  And I have past more milestones that at the beginning, I could never of anticipated I would or could.

And that saying you have to keep reminding your self. It's not how far I have to go, look how far I have come already.

True, so very true.  Between Lotus, you and many others have helped me stiffen my backbone.  I still can't help but thinking it seems selfish at this stage of my life.
